What is space planning?

Space planning is the process and analysis of interior spaces and is as much a science as an art. The planning process will evaluate how people currently move through your space and test different furniture and equipment placements to optimize the flow of the room and its traffic. Rather than a full design process, space planning blends aesthetics and flow, ensuring your room makes sense through a usability lens while still allowing you to design it with temperature, texture, and vibes in mind. Space planning is often used in retail and commercial office settings and has quickly become a popular service on the residential side, especially in new builds and renovated spaces. 

What does a Space Planner do? 

Space planners normally work with interior designers, or are interior designers themselves and design and map out the functional layout of your interior room. They want to understand how you currently use the room and then redesign it to an ideal layout that optimizes negative space and traffic flow.   • How do you determine how much space a person needs in an office environment?

    Generally, you will want to provide between 150 and 200 square feet per employee in a standard commercial lease. For those who are looking for open-plan offices, as you see at a start-up, you will normally be on the lower side. While if you want a more traditional partner-style office plan, you will be a little larger. 

  • Do you need architectural drawings to do space planning?

    Potentially, but we can normally start the process with basic room measurements and photos. However, to get the best possible plan, detailed plans are usually preferred, as our planners can review the details and create a plan that works perfectly for your space.   

  • How often should an office layout be revisited?

    Typically, it is best to update an office layout every two to three years to allow your company to adapt to changing team dynamics and sizes, technological changes, and hybrid work models.
