Prefabricated steel buildings are a great option for those who use overhead cranes as their strong foundation and frames can handle almost any crane type. From static cranes like jib cranes to top-running and underhung cranes, our Nucor frame can be customized to handle loads and provide you with the flexibility to move materials, pallets, or parts around your building with ease.

As our metal frames have a clear-span interior, you can easily install a crane that will use the entire space. You will not need to navigate columns, and with a beam-to-beam reach, underslung cranes can access almost the entire square footage of the building, if that would be helpful in your daily operations.

Cranes are something that we need to consider when designing your custom metal building. These workhorses are going to change your design slightly, and we are going to need to think about the following things when thinking about the design of the primary framing of your building: 

total crane capacity.

First and foremost, we will need the details of your crane, including its total capacity. Not all cranes are created equal, and we want to build our primary framing to handle loads over the max to keep your building safe during heavy lifts.

Next, we will consider the crane's location and how it will function. The primary framing set-up will vary depending on whether it is a fixed crane, such as a jib crane, or a movable crane running on rails across the building. 

Vertical clearance.

Naturally, we need to check the crane’s vertical clearance, which is especially important if you are looking to install a top-running crane in your building. For most crane manufacturers, vertical clearance is not excessive, but some brands are taller than others, and we will need to accommodate that height in the primary framing design.

  • What kind of cranes can you install on a Nucor building system?

    Nucor building systems can have a few different types of cranes installed. Top-running cranes are a great investment for companies that need heavier lifting and maximum vertical clearance. Underhung, or underslung, cranes are another great option if you are looking to move loads close to your side walls or need to maximize floor space. While jib and monorail systems are ideal for manufacturing or localized lifting tasks. All three crane styles can be installed on your existing Nucor metal building system. 

  • How do you add a crane to your design?

    When you are in the design phase, let us know that you are looking for an overhead crane, and we will check the AISC and MBMA specifications and add the exact crane data to the building design. We can also work with you to install the crane so that your building is operational as soon as it is ready for occupancy. 

  • Can I order a crane through Nucor or Boyers?

    No, Nucor does not manufacture overhead cranes, but it does offer metal building frameworks and crane runway beams to support crane installations. If you are looking to add an overhead crane, our team will work with you to find a supplier who can install it easily on your planned Nucor metal building.
