What is a steel structure?
A steel structure is the load-bearing framework built from connected structural steel components and serves as the engineered skeleton of any larger building or infrastructure project. The steel structure is in place to absorb, transfer and withstand applied loads from everyday use, wind and seismic forces. Generally, these structures are chosen for their high strength-to-weight ratio, which allows for larger open spaces and taller buildings than would be possible with traditional concrete, rebar, and timber. As these structures are built from high-strength steel, they flex under pressure rather than snap, which makes them the perfect high-strength addition to a job site. To speed up erection, steel structures are typically prefabricated off-site and assembled on-site.
What is included in a steel structure?
Our steel structural services include everything you need to assemble and produce a steel structure. This includes the framing system, support structure, and any associated connecting pieces that are part of the primary or secondary frame.
structural framing system.
Our structural framing systems are designed and fabricated by Nucor Building Systems and provide a strong, well-designed structure to build upon. Our framing system includes the primary frame, which includes the weight-bearing columns, secured with anchor pins in the foundation, and the weight-bearing beams, which connect to the columns to form the backbone of the structure.
support structures.
Our secondary frame is then attached to the primary frame, securing the bonds and creating a fully functional steel structure. For the columns, we will add secondary support structures called girts to secure the columns together. Our girts come in flush, inset and bypass. For the roof, we will use a combination of purlins and struts to bring the roof together and maintain proper weight distribution throughout the structure.
How does a steel structure compare to a steel building?
A steel structure is a little different from a steel building in that, unlike a fully finished building, it is the exoskeleton without a roof or wall panels. It is designed to build upon and provide clients with a sturdy base for office towers, mezzanines, and even industrial pipe racks.

Big job or small, commercial or residential, we don’t quit until it’s built right. Start your project; fill out the form, and we’ll take it from there.
Why would you choose a steel structure?
Steel structures are often the choice when you are looking for a specific use case, dealing with large spaces, or facing load-bearing requirements that traditional building materials like concrete or timber cannot meet.
complex architecture.
Steel frames are a great option if you are undertaking a complex architectural endeavor, such as a stadium roof, an exhibition hall, or even a building with an exterior finish that will place high demands on the frame, such as thick glass or stone cladding.
Open Spaces.
We have worked with a wide variety of clients to design and build steel structures that support larger builds where other materials would fall short. This includes the use of space frames, which can span large areas without support columns, or portal frames, which are ideal for warehouses, logistics facilities, or aircraft hangars.
high load-bearing needs.
When you have high load-bearing needs in a build, a steel structure is going to be a better investment than yards and yards of concrete. We have worked with many multifamily and commercial office tower builders to construct steel structures that support low-rise, mid-rise, and tall towers throughout Northwest Ohio.
flexibility.
Steel structures give you the flexibility to take your next steps. Whether you are going to build up, out, or simply want a structure to start with that you can expand later, our design-build team can engineer a metal structure that gives you the flexibility you need to create the building you have always wanted.
What are some of the more common steel structures we can build?
The design-build experts at Boyers have been working across the Ohio Valley building and assembling steel structures for multifamily, commercial, industrial and agricultural clients. From initial discussion to final build, our team of project managers and builders can deliver a steel structure that not only meets your needs but also provides the flexibility to grow your operations and expand your business.
Structural Frames for Office Buildings.
As steel has one of the highest strength-to-weight ratios in the construction industry, skyscrapers and high-rise office buildings often use a steel structure to support their construction at ground level. This steel structure not only looks industrial and modern but also provides the tower with the flexibility to withstand high winds and the pressure of the building's weight.
Mezzanines.
We have built numerous mezzanines within existing steel buildings using our steel structure building processes. These mezzanines provide our clients with additional storage space, office space, or simply extra room to serve as swing space to support the harvest, operations, or your commercial storefront.
Industrial Pipe Racks.
For many, industrial pipe racks are a necessary investment to carry process and utility pipelines between different parts of the facility. These pipe racks will carry everything from electrical cable trays to instrument cables and even air coolers, and are designed to handle heavy loads, making a steel structure the perfect option for most clients.
Aircraft hangers.
Aircraft hangars need a large area to handle the wingspan of the aircraft that call it home. Steel structures are a great option for building on, as they offer a clear-span design that is ideal for everything from ultralight aircraft to commercial airliners.
hospitals.
Throughout the Ohio Valley, many hospitals use steel structures within existing buildings to provide additional load-bearing capacity for heavy machinery and accommodate wide floor plans. From the emergency room to specialized surgical bays, hospitals rely on steel structures to keep the building up and supported.
Frequently Asked Questions.
Answers You Don’t Need a Hard Hat to Understand.
How are Nucor steel structures secured?
Unlike other prefabricated steel structures on the market, Nucor Building Systems uses anchor bolts that are secured to a concrete foundation to secure the structure to the site. During the foundation pour, our team will ensure the anchor bolts are in the proper position, install the primary framing columns on them, and secure them with bolts and fasteners. Anchor bolts are preferred over other options, including screws, as they are part of the foundation rather than being drilled into it.
What are the main ways that a steel structure design starts to increase in price?
In terms of budgeting, a steel structure is very affordable, especially if you choose a scaled-down version with only the primary and secondary framing. However, if you are looking for more customization, the cost can increase. Adding additional supports for masonry, glass, or other wall materials, as well as runways for overhead cranes, can increase costs. However, when compared to other building methods, a prefabricated steel structure, even with all the customizations, is generally cheaper and more cost-effective over the long term in terms of necessary routine maintenance and the structure's lifespan.
What is the difference between a steel structure and a steel building?
A steel structure is the skeleton of a building and can be built out with glass facades and even industrial pipe racks. These structures are engineered and prefabricated, but are the bare bones of a steel building. In comparison, a steel building is a complete structure with the steel frame, wall panels, and roof system, and can also include doors, windows, and skylights.
How large can a Nucor clear span get?
Nucor’s design systems use clear-span framing to create large, column-free steel buildings. With Nucor’s TrussFrame technology, our custom metal structures are able to achieve up to 250 feet between interior columns, which means that for the majority of steel structures, you do not need interior columns, allowing for simple and straightforward operations within the structure.
Can the structure be modified or expanded in the future?
Yes, one of the benefits of using a Boyers-designed-and-built steel structure is its ease of expansion. If you think you may want to expand during the design phase, please mention this so our designers can redesign the primary framing to accommodate the expansion when you are ready.
Are your steel structures sustainable?
As one of the greenest steel manufacturers in the United States, Nucor has developed a steel manufacturing process that is one-third of the global average in emissions and carbon output. To meet these aggressive carbon output targets, Nucor uses circular electric arc furnaces and delivers steel that is 100% recyclable at the end of its life.
How much maintenance does a steel structure require?
To properly maintain your new steel structure, follow the guidelines in the Nucor Preventive Maintenance Manual. However, you will want to ensure that you are cleaning off any dirt and grime, inspecting any sealants, checking for loose fasteners and confirming that your structure is not experiencing any rust or corrosion buildup.
