What is pre-engineered steel?

Pre-engineered steel systems, also known as prefabricated steel, are a building method in which structural steel components are pre-engineered and fabricated at a facility before being sent to a building site for assembly. These prefabricated building systems will normally include primary and secondary framing, roofing systems, and wall panels, which are then assembled on site using bolts and fasteners that are supplied with the main structural components. The pre-engineered name comes from the fact that all weight-bearing elements are engineered using structural schematics and loading calculations before the manufacturing phase begins. These systems are often advertised as ready-built or pop-up and have seen their popularity increase substantially over the past several decades due to their relatively low up-front cost compared to other commercial building methods.

Why is this building system preferred for commercial applications?

Pre-engineered building systems like Nucor's are preferred for commercial applications, as they are cost-effective and fully customizable to a building's specific needs. Unlike other commercial construction options out there, these prefabricated buildings are built around your specifications and can be designed to fit your building plot, location and machinery or insurance requirements. Not only that, these building systems are budget-friendly and will reduce the overall start-up costs typically associated with a new commercial building in Northwest Ohio. These buildings also allow for more predictable construction and permitting timelines, with the normal process only taking a matter of weeks rather than months or years.

What are the benefits of pre-engineered metal buildings?

Pre-engineered metal buildings offer several benefits over other commercial building methods that we see in Northwest Ohio, making them an ideal option for those seeking a functional, customizable steel building that is designed around your company’s requirements.

Fast assembly.

One of the biggest benefits of choosing a custom metal building is the lightning-fast assembly compared to other building methods. Once the site is prepped and the foundation pour is scheduled, a straightforward project will generally take between four and twelve weeks to complete the erection of your building.

Clear-spam space.

Whether you are looking for warehouse space, an aviation hangar, or even a machine shop, interior columns can make day-to-day operations a challenge. That is where the clear-span frame comes in, enabling the construction of wide steel buildings without the need for interior columns.

Built for NW Ohio.

Working with a design-build company like Boyers will ensure your building is built to last here in Northwest Ohio. From insulated wall panels that keep the heat in during the winter to galvanized steel exterior components to limit corrosion, our metal building designs are at home in and around Wauseon, OH.

Common Pre-Engineered Framing Systems.

As a proud Nucor partner, our design-build teams are the local Northwest Ohio experts on Nucor's steel frame offerings. From the ever-popular clear-span frame to the lean-to option that makes additions a pain-free project, our team can answer any questions that you may have about the process, then design your building, and build it.

Clear Span Frames.

Clear-span frames are among the most in-demand framing systems Nucor builds. These systems can support wider buildings without the need to install weight-bearing interior columns. This is ideal for warehouses, aviation hangars, or agricultural buildings, as you do not need to worry about navigating a column in the middle of the building. To do this, the RCG framing system uses high-strength tapered steel and advanced engineering methods during fabrication, enabling our team to assemble this strong metal building that will withstand weather, wind and its own self-weight without the need for annoying interior columns.

Single Slope Frames.

Single-slope frames, including the RCS and RMS-X, are designed for use with a single-plane sloped roof. These designs are what you think of when you think of open-access agricultural buildings or storage sheds with a high opening and a sloping roof towards the back. This specific frame style is great for those dealing with drainage restrictions and can be customized with facades and parapets to give the appearance of a standard steel building, with walls appearing the same size if that is required by local ordinance.

Multi Span Frames.

Nucor had a few multi-span frame options, including the RMG-X and the Tapered Beam- Rigid Frame. These multi-span layouts allow you to build vast buildings with strategically placed columns to accommodate your ideal layout. Tapered beam frames use straight columns instead of tapered ones, freeing up interior space that is essential when installing enclosures, crane systems, or small partitions within your building.

Lean-To Frames.

Lean-tos have been a common building style for centuries, and Nucor's lean-to designs are perfect for expansions and additions. The LCS and LMS-X are designed to be installed on an existing main building frame or columns and cannot be installed as standalone units. This design allows for maximum usable square footage and is typically used for swing spaces, storage spaces or covered outdoor areas for livestock.

Modular Frames.

Nucor's Module Rigid Frame, called the RMG-X, is a multi-span gable designed for use in exceptionally wide buildings and warehouses. This primary frame uses a few strategically placed interior columns within the building to support these larger spans. It is designed to work in multiple configurations depending on your specific needs and specifications. This design is available in both gable and single-slope styles, making it ideal for those looking for a wide storage shed or a massive warehouse.

Common Steel Types and grades.

Steel buildings in Northwest Ohio generally use two different steel types during construction. These high-strength steels are designed to withstand the loads, pressures, and weather we get here in the Ohio Valley and will provide you with the confidence that can only come with a proper prefabricated steel building.

carbon steel.

Carbon steel is a high-strength structural metal we typically use for our primary framing. The metal itself is extremely strong, hard, and scratch-resistant, making it ideal for interior use. Nucor’s Building Systems typically use carbon steel for primary frames.

Galvanized steel.

Galvanized steel is one of the most popular building steels due to its inherent corrosion resistance, making it ideal for outdoor or moisture-prone areas. We normally use galvanized steel for secondary framing components, wall panels, and any metal parts that will be exposed to the exterior environment.

Frequently Asked Questions.

Answers You Don’t Need a Hard Hat to Understand.

  • Does using pre-engineered steel speed up construction processes?

Yes, pre-engineered steel is generally 30-50% faster than other common commercial construction methods. The reason for this is that pre-engineered steel is prefabricated off-site. When it arrives at your building site, our team can assemble the pieces rather than go through a time-consuming fabrication process.

  • How much do pre-engineered steel buildings cost?

While we have seen significant increases in steel prices, the team at Boyers can deliver a custom steel building for as little as $25 per square foot. The lower cost is due to reduced labor costs associated with assembly processes and lower overall material waste.

  • What is the best frame for a conventional steel building?

The best steel frame for your typical steel building build-out with Boyers is our clear-span frames. These frames give you the benefits of a clear-span design while allowing you to enjoy customization, add-on features, and a building that can be as wide as 200 feet without a single interior column.

  • What kind of steel is best for pre-engineered builds?

There are two types of steel we typically recommend for pre-engineered steel buildings. The first is hot-rolled carbon steel, which has an extremely high load rating, making it perfect for structural elements like a primary frame. The second type is cold-rolled galvanized steel, which is a medium load-bearing steel that has a zinc coating to prevent corrosion. Due to this coating, we normally use galvanized steel for external components such as walls and roofs, and for parts of the secondary frame that are sometimes exposed to the elements.

  • What does the zinc coating on galvanized steel do?

Zinc is used in galvanized steel because it acts as a natural anti-corrosion shield for the metal. Zinc is naturally more reactive than iron, which means that it will sacrifice itself to corrosion before it can affect the steel’s structural integrity. It also acts as a physical barrier between the iron and the environment, and through the Patina Effect, creates a protective layer of zinc oxide, zinc hydroxide and zinc carbonate to slow corrosion compared to untreated steel.

  • What happens if there are issues with the process?

In rare cases where we notice an issue with the pre-engineered steel delivered to your building site, our team will quickly fix it. As a Nucor partner, we have prioritized access to the Nucor supply chain, enabling us to obtain replacement parts and components with ease if needed.
